Wikigroaning is either a great new game to play while you’re supposed to be working or the best argument against Wikipedia as a legitimate research tool. I’m thinking it’s both. The premise is to search Wikipedia for an “important” topic that is not thoroughly described, and then try to find a similar but marginally (or not at all) important topic that is more completely documented.
A fine example would be comparing the List of Animal Names to the List of Pokemon. The later is nearly twice as long as the former. Follow the main link for a sizable list of other examples.
Though I have always been a supporter of Wikipedia, this really does illustrate the down-side to letting the general geek population decide which topics are worthy of extensive research and documentation.
